Here’s a look at some interesting things we read/ saw / thought / did last week plus what I’m currently reading. …

Bookish

ONE+ Publisher’s Weekly Best Books of 2018 is out! I only read 1 of the 25 on the Fiction listCirce, Madeline Miller .. which I liked … but not that much.

TWO+ Goodreads Choice Awards voting is open. Dude – don’t let your fave reads down.

THREE+Book-ish drama … about using open books in your Instagram / social media piece. Yeah … seriously … that got published. Sigh. Yes – let’s spread books not hate.

FOUR+ Really enjoyed reading this post on Friday Reads: Shirley Jackson.

SIX+ Loved the Literary Dinner for Sleepy Hollow – perfectly styled for the season … and the book.

Life & Other Stuff

SEVEN+ If you ever feel blogging pressure, read On Blogging as a Hobby and Not a Career … not everybody wants to blog as a career, so don’t feel bad or like you have to be making oodles of $$ from your blog.

EIGHT+ Yes, Everyone On Instagram Is Having More Fun Than You“They’re not just visiting that pristine alpine lake so they can wade thigh-deep into it to take a photo – THEY BASICALLY LIVE THERE. And they bathe in that lake every morning. You’re probably a bit jealous, because you … well, you don’t live next to a pristine alpine lake. And you have to take showers instead of alpine lake baths. And you have to clean your shower. Semi-regularly.”

NINE+ I got sucked into the rabbit hole of the Reddit post on best ways to spend $20 (thanks Lifehacker).

TEN+ Youtube video on 15 Ways to Save Money – totally agree with ALWAYS google “coupon code” before you buy anything – especially if you’re in the physical store.

TWELVE+ Should I … why yes, I think I will make these Gingerbread Pancakes. … and decorate our bedrooms for Fall. I LOVE doing seasonal things.

Reading

Last week I finished reading Grist Mill Road, Christopher J. Yates – which I liked … then didn’t, then did again … one of those books where you can’t decide whether you like it or not – you have any of those?! Then (although I should have moved on to The Pure in Heart, Susan Hill), I started Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, Balli Kaur Jaswal – which is good, but I’m not sure I’m in the mood to read it.

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, Balli Kaur Jaswal

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Women

Nikki lives in cosmopolitan West London, where she tends bar at the local pub. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she’s spent most of her twenty-odd years distancing herself from the traditional Sikh community of her childhood, preferring a more independent (that is, Western) life. When her father’s death leaves the family financially strapped, Nikki, a law school dropout, impulsively takes a job teaching a “creative writing” course at the community center in the beating heart of London’s close-knit Punjabi community. Because of a miscommunication, the proper Sikh widows who show up are expecting to learn basic English literacy, not the art of short-story writing. When one of the widows finds a book of sexy stories in English and shares it with the class, Nikki realizes that beneath their white dupattas, her students have a wealth of fantasies and memories.

  1. Hahaha, the instagram article (#8) was my favorite. Although I’m also kind of excited to go down the reddit rabbit hole to find out what things I should be buying for uner $20! Which is good, because the article complaining about people using books as props just made me sad. That author really needs some more joy in their lives.

  2. I definitely had mixed feelings about Grist Mill Road…I just can’t remember what they are now b/c I read it back in January!

  3. That bookstagram hate feature annoyed me so much.
