3 Comic Series With A Fun Cast of Characters

It wasn’t until I became a book blogger that I started reading and loving graphic novels and comics. I’m so glad I did because there are some true gems out there. I really had no idea of the scope of the genre when I was growing up- believing that they were all just about super heroes and mostly for boys. These days I’ve realized that’s definitely not the case. Here are 3 comics I’ve really loved lately…

Heavy Vinyl, Carly Usdin

I’ve only read the first book in this series and it’s just started to scratch the surface of what’s going on with the group. I’m excited to get pulled into more adventures with them.

When Chris joins the staff at her local record store, she’s surprised to find out that her co-workers share a secret: they’re all members of a secret fight club that take on the patriarchy and fight crime!

The Backstagers, James Tynion IV

Boy do I wish I’d stumbled upon something this cool when I was in high school. The ‘backstage’ is beyond creepy/cool/confusing.

When Jory transfers to an all-boys private high school, he’s taken in by the only ones who don’t treat him like a new kid, the lowly stage crew known as the Backstagers. Not only does he gain great, lifetime friends, Jory is also introduced to an entire magical world that lives beyond the curtain.

Saga, Brian K. Vaughan

“Star-Wars style action collides with Game of Thrones drama”? Sign me up! These are completely wow. They definitely live up to the hype. It’s billed for ‘mature readers’. Let’s just say that my ultra religious and conservative town library won’t carry them. I had to get the ebooks. Worth it.

New parents Marko and Alana risk everything to raise their child amidst a never-ending galactic war.

These are three I really need to check out. Probably about a fifth of the books I read are graphic novels. I tend to borrow a lot of them from the library and buy the ones I really like/want. I have managed to pick up quite a few of them from used bookstores or library sales. My favourite artist/author is Jeff Lemire.

    • I tend to go on comic and graphic novel binges a couple of times a year- usually when I just need a break from longer novels.
