Holy wowzas – we’ve read some good books this year – and here are our favorites … so far!

Fave Book With an”Oh Shit” Moment

Fave Weird Read
Lagoon, Nnedi Okorafor – thanks #Weirdathon. I love that this “alien invasion” happened in Nigeria, and that so much of the culture was written in. One of my biggest pet peeve was when I read a book set in a particular country – and I’m left with the feeling that it could have been anywhere. You won’t have that problem with Lagoon.
Fave Series Ender
Winter (The Lunar Chronicles #4), Marissa Meyer AND The Bitter Kingdom (Fire and Thorns #3), Rae Carson.
Sorry – I couldn’t break the tie. Both books actually left me with very different feels. At the end of Winter, I thought I’m going to miss the World created. At the end of Bitter Kingdom, I felt like my tummy got rubbed and I got put to bed, satisfied!
Kim – I’ve read 28 books this year with the goal to read 50 by the end of December. It’s been such a great year in books so far! Here a three of my favorites.
Favorite Book With Multiple Worlds
A Darker Shade of Magic, V.E. Schwab- This series takes place in three different versions of London- black, white, and gray. Each London has varying degrees of magic and all hell breaks lose when magic starts to shift between worlds.
Favorite Book With A ‘Hunger Games’ Twist
Red Rising, Pierce Brown – There are different levels of society out on Mars. Each level is categorized by color. Darrow is red, the lowest caste level. Longing for justice for his lost love, he finds a way to infiltrate the higher levels and compete for a chance to take the whole system down.
Favorite Stand Alone Book
Uprooted, Naomi Novik – I’ve kind of gotten tired of series and really appreciate a great book that stands all on its own. This twist on a fairy tale had every thing you need for an amazing plot. I didn’t want it to end.

I’m interested in Lagoon, it’s not often you see sci-fi set outside of western locations. And it’s always great to learn about new places, especially when the author has taken care to describe them. And of course I have to get to Illuminae one of these days…

Such a wonderful list here! I sampled A Darker Shade of Magic the other day and loved it! Sampled Uprooted too and loved it! I need to convert these samples into actual books. Also, cannot wait to read Lagoon – been hearing so much about it!
