7 Awesome Audiobook Narrations of 2016 #AMonthofFaves

We are huge fans of audiobooks here at Girlxoxo and really love the benefit of being able to ‘read’ a book while on the go. The narration can really make or break a book and we’ve found some great ones this year. Here are our favorite audiobook narrations from 2016…Kim –

The Raven King, Maggie Stiefvater (Author) – Will Patton (Narrator)

This is probably one of my all time favorite narrations. I just loved Will Patton’s voice throughout this entire series. I sometimes wonder if I’d have loved the books just as much had I read them rather than listened to Patton read them.

Six of Crows, Leigh Bardugo (Author) – Jay Snyder, Brandon Rubin, Fred Berman, Lauren Fortgang, Roger Clark, Elizabeth Evans, Tristan Morris (Narrators)

I’m a sucker for a book narrated by an entire cast. I love how it brings the story to life completely and Six of Crows was no different. I got the full experience.

Winter, Marissa Meyer (Author) – Rebecca Soler (Narrator)

I really enjoyed listening to these books. Soler gave each of the main ladies their own character and I thought that could have been really hard to do, especially in Winter when they all came together.

Science Fiction Audiobooks for Newbies

Tanya –

The Nest, Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney (Author) – Mia Barron (Narrator)

This book again – yes, I’ve only mentioned it a zillion times … but that’s how it is when you love a book! I listened to the audiobook narrated by Mia Barton, and she did an excellent job in immersing me in the story completely. The character portrayals in the book were a highlight for me, and it is done so well by the narrator, that even months after reading this book, the Plumb family is still in my head.

Career of Evil, Robert Galbraith (Author) – Robert Glenister (Narrator)

This is the 3rd book in the Cormoran Strike series, authored by J.K. Rowling using a pseudonym. The 1st 2 books are also narrated by Glenister and he is no doubt a big part of why I love this series so much – as has painted a vivid picture in my head of the gruff, complex private detective, Cormoran Strike. And it’s a little worrying that the expected tv adaptation might do one of my favorite detectives justice.

International Mystery Books

The Obelisk Gate, N.K. Jemisin – Robin Miles (Narrator)

The Obelisk Gate is the 2nd book in The Broken Earth series, and it is one bad ass story. The narrator did an awesome job representing all the characters, and taking me deep down into the story. Each character was distinct, complete with different accents which made me do a double take to see if there was more than one person doing the narration. But no – it’s all Robin Miles!

A Torch Against the Night, Sabaa Tahir – Katharine McEwan , Fiona Hardingham , Steve West (Narrators)

This is the 2nd book in the series, An Ember in the Ashes. I thought the first book was superb, but woah! The 2nd book took it all the way there! The story is told form multiple point of views, and the narrators did a phenomenal job in bringing life to the characters. I could see and feel each one clearly while listening to the audiobook, and I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

Honorary mention to books books published in previous years, but I listened to the audiobook this year and loved – Illuminae, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff; Slade House, David Mitchell; Lagoon, Nnedi Okorafor; Police, Jo Nesbo.

  1. I don’t listen to audio books very often and need to find a way to work them in more. I did listen to Behind Closed Doors this year and loved the narrator, Georgia Maguire.

@Susie – I hope you get some more audiobooks in the next year.

  2. I don’t listen to a TON of audio books- I used to not like them at all, but now I enjoy them much more. Recently I listened to Good As Gone by Amy Gentry on audio and really enjoyed it. It was narrated by Karen Peakes!

I may need to do a reread of Maggie’s series on audio. I still need to read The Raven King 1st though to finish. It’s #1 on my Jan 2017 TBR
