Monthly Motif April Check In {Best of the Best}

The April theme for the 2016 Monthly Motif Reading Challenge is Best of the Best. “Read a book that has won recognition or a literary award.” What are you going to read?

Kim- I’m going to hit two birds with one stone this month. My book club is reading Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor, which was the 1977 Newbery Award Winner.

Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family’s struggle in the face of racism and social injustice. And it is also Cassie’s story—Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family.

Tanya – It’s hard for me to decide what to read for this challenge because I love reading award winning books – although I don’t always love the books themselves. I ultimately settled on something I’ve been meaning to read for a long time – a winner of the little known Carl Brandon Awards, given to works of speculative fiction created by a self-identified person of color, or dealing with issues of race and ethnicity. I’ll be reading Half World, Hiromi Goto.

Half World (Book)

Melanie Tamaki is human but her parents aren’t. They are from Half World, a Limbo between our world and the afterlife, and her father is still there. When her mother disappears, Melanie must follow her to Half World?and neither of them may return alive.
