This Is How We Read This Year

# of Books Read (… so far)

KIM ✩ – 40 books so far. My goal was 50. I doubt I’ll finish anymore but I’m pretty happy with my 40.

✤ TANYA ✤ 51 books so far (hoping for 55 by the end of the year). Last year I read 51 books. My goal is usually 52.

Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2018?

KIM ✩ Shortest: All Systems Red, Martha Wells (144 pgs) – and Longest – Obsidio, Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff (615 pgs)

TANYA ✤ Shortest: Binti, Nnedi Okorafor – and Longest – The Outsider, Stephen King.

Genre That Got the Most Love

KIM ✩ Contemporary / Literary Fiction – 12 – tied with Mystery – 12. Following closely behind was Fantasy/Magical Realism – 9. I’m surprised that Contemporary rated so high this year. I normally avoid that genre. I thought I read more Sci-fi but only counted 5.

TANYA ✤ Contemporary / Literary Fiction – 19 – followed by Fantasy / Magical Realism / Mythology – all taken together – and then mystery / thrillers. I normally don’t read a lot of contemporary novels … but I think I’m going back to my genre loving self next year.

How We Read

KIM ✩ 13 Audiobooks | 27 physical books – no eBooks. I was really loving reading physical books from the library this year but I realize that I’d have a higher book total if I’d utilized audiobooks more.

TANYA ✤ 35 Audiobooks | 16 physical books – no eBooks. While I love audiobooks, towards the end of the year I was way more into reading physical books, and I hope this continues into next year.

Books We DNF’d (Did Not Finish)

KIM ✩ There were a ton of books I started and put down after the first chapter this year – too many to even remember.

TANYA ✤ – Only 1 – The Book of M, Peng Shepard. I finished about 50% of it before it was time to return it to the library … and I just wasn’t into it enough to return it. I’ve slogged through worse … but I just wasn’t in the mood to spend time on a book I wasn’t feeling.

Month We Read the Least & the Most

KIM ✩ I read something every month but I read the most in January. This is pretty typical for me as I always start off the year pretty strong. I read the least amount of books in August, only finishing 1 book.

TANYA ✤ I read something every month unlike last year, but in April was my slowest reading month, with only 2 books finished. December is, as usual, the month I read the most, with 7 books finished so far.

When We Read

KIM ✩ In the ten minutes here and there that the kids are happily playing on their own or in the evening after I’ve put them to bed. I’d really like to carve out some early morning reading time again this year but that all depends on my youngest sleeping better.

TANYA ✤ I traveled about the same amount as last year, 30+ trips, so that’s when I do a fair chunk of reading (most of which were audiobooks), but I also spent a significant amount of time waiting … waiting at airports and hospital / doctor’s offices … so this has also been prime reading time. I’m hoping to eliminate that part of it next year … but should travel about the same amount.

Most Memorable Character(s)

KIM ✩ Miryem in Spinning Silver, Naomi Novak. A badass female of her time- clever and tough as nails.
TANYA ✤ Eleanor Oliphant in Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, Gail Honeyman. That character was unforgettable, and one of my favorites of all time.

Fave Books of the Year (Just a Hint)

KIM ✩ It’s the second in a series by a well-known YA author. The author has hinted that there will be a third book “many years down the line.”

TANYA ✤ Hint … it’s written by a “new to me” author, an author of color, published in 2016 and was an Oprah Book Club selection.

I tend to read a lot right after bedtime or during travel as well, but I can’t imagine myself getting up earlier for anything (even more reading)! I’m looking forward to your favorites of the year. 🙂

    Your hints stumped me!

What a great idea to break down how many books read by month. I did just that and saw that my best months were 14 books read and December has been my slowest with all the holiday shenanigans.

I’ve heard so many good things about Eleanor Oliphant. I just picked up the book and look forward to reading it soon.

And a big local hello wave to Kim…I’m also a Utah native!

Thanks for the month of faves. It really has helped me pull my reading year together. Looking forward to another great year from both of you!

Both of you are surprised your read so much contemporary, meanwhile I’m over here wishing I had read more.
December is usually my best reading month as well.
My fave so far this year is a memoir, which I’m surprised by.

  4. Kim and Tanya, I’m not super happy with my numbers, but it could have been worse.

Tanya, I couldn’t figure out how to get the year in books from Goodreads to my blog. How did you do it? Screenshot it?

I just can’t read science fiction for some reason. I want to, but I just can’t. I’m jealous of your 5, Kim.

Like you, Kim, I DNFed a lot. A lot.

Unlike you, Kim, I can’t read in small sittings; I’m more a person that likes to sit and read for long periods of time, like Tanya, even though I don’t travel.
