Mixed Bag Reading {3 Genre’s To Touch On Still}

mixed bag readingAt the beginning of the year I made a list of genres that I wanted to read from in 2016. Then I got sidetracked and fell down the black hole of YA fantasy again. That’s not a bad thing but I’m ready to get back to my genre list…So far I’ve read mostly crime, fantasy, and science fiction. The Monthly Motif Challenge has pulled me out of those genres a bit but not a lot.

I’ve picked one book from each of the genres I haven’t touched yet to help me finish 2016. Here’s what I’ve picked…

genre reading

Horror – I Hunt Killers, Barry Lyga

Jasper “Jazz” Dent is a likable teenager. A charmer, one might say. But he’s also the son of the world’s most infamous serial killer, and for Dear Old Dad, Take Your Son to Work Day was year-round. Jazz has witnessed crime scenes the way cops wish they could—from the criminal’s point of view.

Historical Fiction – The Muse, Jessie Burton

On a hot July day in 1967, Odelle Bastien climbs the stone steps of the Skelton gallery in London, knowing that her life is about to change forever. Having struggled to find her place in the city since she arrived from Trinidad five years ago, she has been offered a job as a typist under the tutelage of the glamorous and enigmatic Marjorie Quick. But though Quick takes Odelle into her confidence, and unlocks a potential she didn’t know she had, she remains a mystery – no more so than when a lost masterpiece with a secret history is delivered to the gallery.

Contemporary – A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale

I like to read from a mixed bag. I know some readers who only read contemporary or only read mysteries. I like to touch it all.

  1. I want to read these three books also! I try and read across genres but I find myself reading mostly non-fiction.
