Monthly Motif February Check-In [Cover Love]

It’s the month of love and the perfect time to read a book simply because you adore the cover. It’s okay to be a little spontaneous and reckless and, maybe, not even check the synopsis first! Okay, maybe just a peek. What books are going to get a little love this month? Welcome to the February Check-In of the 2019 Monthly Motif Reading Challenge

I recently saw Everything Under, Daisy Johnson while scrolling through Instagram and immediately put it on hold at my library. The cover is so incredibly beautiful. Blues, greens, plants… basically I love everything about it. I’m excited about the synopsis too and that this book is supposed to have an element of magical realism.

Words are important to Gretel, always have been. As a child, she lived on a canal boat with her mother, and together they invented a language that was just their own. Now Gretel works as a lexicographer, updating dictionary entries, which suits her solitary nature. A phone call from the hospital interrupts Gretel’s isolation and throws up questions from long ago. She begins to remember the private vocabulary of her childhood. She remembers other things, too: the wild years spent on the river; the strange, lonely boy who came to stay on the boat one winter; and the creature in the water

I want to read a lot more speculative fiction this year, and I was reading through 52 in 2018: A Sci-Fi Fantasy Reading Challenge, I came across the cover of The Poppy War, R.F. Khang, which is absolutely gorgeous.

When Rin aced the Keju, the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies, it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard, the most elite military school in Nikan, was even more surprising. But surprises aren’t always good.
