Our Big Book Summer (Challenge Update)

big book summer

We participated in the 2016 Big Book Summer Challenge where any book over 400 pages qualify, and as usual, it challenged us to give the hefties some love.

Tanya … This is probably the best I’ve done after 3 years of doing this fun challenge. I read 6 books total (all page counts are for the hardcover edition) – 3 of them as audiobooks.

  • The Fireman, Joe Hill – 747 pages “liked” … meh
  • The City of Mirrors, Justin Cronin – 602 pages … loved 👍 👍
  • End of Watch, Stephen King – 431 pages … loved 👍 👍
  • Patient Zero, Jonathan Maberry – 421 pages … liked 👍
  • The Deadlands, Benjamin Percy – 416 pages … liked 👍
  • Truly, Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty – 415 pages … liked 👍

My 2 “5 star” favorites were End of Watch and The City of Mirrors.

Kim … I had a really great big book summer having finished 5 books. This was my first time participating in the challenge and I’m definitely coming back for more next year. Two of these I listened to on audio (Broken Harbour & Six of Crows). Every single one of these books earned “5 star” ratings!

    • Broken Harbour, Tana French – 533 pages … loved 👍 👍
    • Six of Crows, Leigh Bardugo – 465 pages … loved 👍 👍
    • Half Wild, Sally Green – 412 pages … loved 👍 👍
    • The Girl With All the Gifts, MR Carey – 460 pages … loved 👍 👍
    • A Gathering of Shadows, VE Schwab – 512 pages … loved 👍 👍

Thanks to Book by Book for hosting the challenge. What’s the biggest book you read over the summer?

  1. This sounds like a fun challenge! I’m such a slow reader, though, and I don’t know if I would be able to read such hefty books during the summer, while my kiddos are at home with me all day! I hope to read The Girl With All the Gifts soon. I keep forgetting I have it because it’s on my Kindle and I hardly ever use that. Great job with your challenge, guys!

  2. Wow, you two both did great on the Big Book Summer Challenge this year!! Way to go! Lots of big books…and lots of great reads, too!

My husband also read The City of Mirrors for his Big Book Summer (unofficially) and also loved it – I need to find time to read that one now – loved the first two!

And my husband and I both love the Tana French novels – I have only read the first one – was supposed to read #2 for Big Book Summer but ran out of time – but he has read all of them!

Hope you will join the fun again next year!

  3. Aw, Tanya, it stinks that the longest book was also the most “meh” book! But at least you liked the rest of them! I haven’t read any of The Passage series yet, but I want to, so I am glad you loved it!

And Kim, ALL 5 star reads is amazing!! I am happy for you, that is a lot of good pages 😀 I loved Half Wild too, and Six of Crows! I NEED to start AGOS too, so I am glad you loved it!

Great job with this challenge, ladies!! I am impressed- I am so bad with big books
