Read Eat Watch [The June Edition] and #SummerAtoZ

I don’t know if summer is approaching where you are – but God it’s such a glorious time of year here. We’re coming off the gloom and dark days of winter – and summer vibes are in FULL effect at casa Girlxoxo. Here are our recommendations for what you should read, eat (or drink) and watch this month … and we’d love to hear yours!

Read

Behold the Dreamers (Book)

✤ Tanya … I usually pick my favorite book read last month to recommend, and so I HIGHLY encourage you to pick up Behold the Dreamers, Imbolo Mbue. You will not be able to put it down … better yet – pick up the audiobook version.

It’s the story of Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem, who has come to the United States to provide a better life for himself, his wife, Neni, and their six-year-old son. Jende can hardly believe his luck when he lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers. But when the financial world is rocked by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the Jongas are desperate to keep Jende’s job — even as their marriage threatens to fall apart.

✤ Kim … I was perusing the list of 2017 Nebula nominees and came across Spoonbenders, Daryl Gregory and Jade City, Fonda Lee. Eventually I had to return Spoonbenders without getting to it, but I did finish Jade City and it was so good! The perfect book for Big Book Summer.

Magical jade—mined, traded, stolen, and killed for—is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. For centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion. When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone—even foreigners—wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence.

Eat … or Drink

✤ Tanya … With summer coming up, I’ve been feeling for lighter foods + Cobb Salads are easily my favorite. I usually make the “clean out your fridge” version – doing something similar to what Kim mentioned in her Week in the Life [Dinner Edition].

As for drinks … I’m here to get you turned on (or back on) to the humble Moscow Mule. Vodka, Lime Juice and Ginger Beer.

Watch

Scandal TV Show

✤ TanyaScandal – there are 7 seasons. 7 seasons of non-stop drama!! I know this is a wildly popular show, but I just never watched it before and it’s so worth the hype! But seriously – 7 seasons of drama is a LOT to take in, so … don’t binge watch too many episodes back to back … just trust me on this one.

✤ Kim … We just started watching Lost In Space on Netflix. It’s a reboot of the popular 1960s TV show Lost In Space. I’m a big sucker for sci-fi and fantasy TV shows so it caught my eye. We’re not that far into it yet, so at this point, all I can say is that I’m intrigued.

We would love to hear your recommendation of something to read, eat or watch this month!

And the #SummerAtoZ Blogging Event is back at Girlxoxo again this year. It’s inspired by the Blogging A to Z challenge – but we’re doing it throughout the summer.  We’ll be writing posts that start with – or where the theme starts with – each letter of the alphabet from A to Z.

    Behold the Dreamers sounds good.

I don’t watch much television… after about a year, I finally got through season 1 of The Americans. As far as books go, I read books 1-3 of the Ember in the Ashes Quartet and Renée Ahdieh’s Flame in the Mist/Smoke in the Sun duology and those were good.

  2. I’m showing my age, but I loved the original Lost in Space. I’ll have to check out the reboot.
