Reading From the Best Sellers List + Movie Review {A Man Called Ove}

I read A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman last year and then convinced my husband to read it this year. Contemporary is not usually my jam so I’m not sure what prompted me to pick this one up. I’m glad I did though…

A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman

A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.

The beauty of this book is that it covers a really dark and sad subject (suicide and death) in a way that allows you to ask the hard questions but not fall off the deep end of despair. There’s humor, sarcasm, whit, and love in this book. You’ll laugh out loud and you’ll cry the ugly tears and every part of it will end up being just what you needed from a book.

The movie is just as good as the book but be warned that it’s a foreign version so you’ll have to read subtitles. Also, several parts of the book are changed or done a little differently. Honestly, that really didn’t make the movie better or worse for me. I only have one complaint about the movie- some of the secondary characters are mere blips when they actually play quite lovely roles in the book.

So do yourself a favor- read this most definitely and if you’re so inclined, see the movie also.
