#ReadThis 4 (More) Awesome Haunted House Books

October is #WickedGoodReads Month here at GXO. This week, we’re focusing on books with Dangerous Places. Last year we shared 4 Haunted House Books You Should NOT Read When You’re Home Alone. And this year – we’re giving you 4 more … because aren’t these just the scariest to read late at night?!

Slade House, David Mitchell

Down the road from a working-class British pub, along the brick wall of a narrow alley, if the conditions are exactly right, you’ll find the entrance to Slade House. A stranger will greet you by name and invite you inside. At first, you won’t want to leave. Later, you’ll find that you can’t. Every nine years, the house’s residents—an odd brother and sister—extend a unique invitation to someone who’s different or lonely: a precocious teenager, a recently divorced policeman, a shy college student. But what really goes on inside Slade House? For those who find out, it’s already too late.

Note to self – don’t go in any house that’s on a creepy dead end street that has a history of disappearances.

The Supernatural Enhancements, Edgar Cantero

I can’t even explain this book except to say that it was so much fun to read. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough trying to figure everything out.

Twenty-something A. and his mute teenage companion, Niamh have moved into Axton House, a house which they are soon discovering is haunted and frequented by members of a secret society. Should they expect anything less from the distant relative who had a reputation for being eccentric and who committed suicide by throwing himself from his bedroom window?

The Little Stranger, Sarah Waters

Creepy in a quiet and strange way. I read this book several years ago but I still think about this time of year when I start reading ghost stories again.

Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor, is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall. Hundreds Hall is the dilapidated home of the Ayres family. But are the Ayreses haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life? Little does Dr. Faraday know how closely, and how terrifyingly, their story is about to become entwined with his.

Anna Dressed in Blood, Kendare Blake

Half the time I felt sorry for Anna, the other half I was terrified of her.

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead. Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before.

  1. Now that I’ve read Cloud Atlas (and was blown away by it!) I want to read Slade House even more.

I haven’t read any of these yet and was having trouble thinking of haunted house books…other than the classics like The Shining!

These all sound spooky and perfect for this month!

  2. I have Slade House sitting on my unread shelf currently, new in, and I’m hoping to read it this month. Great list!

I haven’t read Little Strangers but I did read Affinity a few years ago and it’s perfectly creepy for this time of year. More seance type lore than haunted houses, but still good. 😉

    • Little Strangers was subtle and mostly just dark and sad rather than scary.
