#WeekendReads {The Welcome Back Edition}

I’m trying to get back into the swing of things with blogging. This summer involved a new job and a move from NY to the Mid-West. But I missed reading and talking about books and things, so here’s my weekly check-in on what I’ev been reading, doing and loving on the interwebz.

Bookish

Books Finished This Week: Zombie, Joyce Carol Oates. This was definitely a creepy, weird book. I felt totally icky after reading it.

Books Abandoned: Go Set a Watchman, Harper Lee. I was listening to the audiobook, but it’s so boring – I just couldn’t listen anymore.

Currently Reading: Double Dead, Chuck Wendig. Zombies + Vampires. Yes, please!

“Coburn’s been dead now for close to a century, but seeing as how he’s a vampire and all, it doesn’t much bother him. Or at least it didn’t, not until he awoke from a forced five-year slumber to discover that most of human civilization was now dead-but not dead like him, oh no.”

Challenge Updates

4 Must Read Books on My Summer Reading List {The Familiar Authors Edition} – I’ve only finished 1 book from this list, which was Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future by A.S. King. I liked it, but it didn’t really wow med. YA books about teenage angst aren’t really my thing. I did like the magical realism aspect of it though.

#WeeklyWorkouts

There is no Training for Warriors fitness dojo close by where I love now, so I’ve been trying CrossFit and while I don’t love it as much as TFW, it’s still pretty awesome – I went 2x this week for the foundations classes, and have 2 more to do before I can go to the regular workouts.

Running, Total Miles = 15 (4+2+4+2+3) – all treadmill runs. I so need to start running outside.

  1. I had no idea that you were moving even. Are you with the same company or a different one now?

@Bryan – different company. Now I’m with a huge conglomerate … in one of the manufacturing facilities still though, but now I have to report to corporate, which is very different from being in a privately held company – where I was before.

  2. Glad you’re finding a new routine for your workouts!

  3. Hope the move is a good one for you! And I’ve no plans to read Harper Lee’s book, it’s just not appealing to me at all. Great links, I’m going to check the gym rats one and the psychological ones

Congrats on the move! Where in the midwest did you land?

Zombies AND vampires? In the same book? I am SO checking that one out!

    Have a great week!

@Michelle – I’m in Illinois … not Chicago sadly, but just a train ride away.

Do you mind me asking where? I grew up in Naperville and am always curious where people land when moving to the suburbs.

I landed in Crystal Lake Michelle – and I’m loving it so far.

  5. Wow, a cross-country move and a new job – that was one busy summer! Glad to see you back in the blogging world 🙂 I missed you!

Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy Go Set a Watchman. I loved the childhood flashbacks ala To Kill a Mockingbird and thought the rest was an interesting look at that time and place in history. Definitely not fast-paced, though!

Hope you enjoy your books this week – welcome back!

@Sue – I might give Go Set a Watchman another attempt in the futre, because I so hate to DNF books.

  6. I took out Go Set a Watchman when it came out from the library but wasn’t in the mood and put it back. I think I will try again but I have heard such mixed things. Have a great week!

@Grace – I hope you like it … but I just couldn’t hang with it.

  7. I didn’t like Lee’s first book so there was no way I was even going to bother trying the second.

Hope your move went as smoothly as possible. Welcome to the Midwest!

@Bree you’re so not missing anything by not reading Lee’s first book. I hate to DNF and it made me not listen to any audio books for like a month because I just couldn’t bear the thought of returning to that book. That’s when I knew I just had to let it go.

      • Oh I hate that feeling. I’m “reading” a book now that makes me feel that way. II know I need to let it go.

  8. Moving from NY to the midwest must be quite the change. I used to know someone online who did CrossFit and she was really into it. Thanks for the link to the September Blogging Events. I’m hoping they will do one every month. I always find out about these things too late!

@Jenna. Seems like everyone who does Crossfit loves it!

Sounds like you had a busy summer with those big chances! I hope you can blog more again now that you’re settled. I am sorry to hear you had to DNF a book, sometimes a book just doesn’t work for you. I haven’t read any of Harper Lee her books and not planning on either. Have a great week!

#Akilah – thanks! I’m trying to post more regularly … not sure I’m fully back yet though.
