March Key Words

“Dream, Day, In, House, Luck, Friend”

Our top book suggestion this month is:

House of Salt and Sorrows, Erin A. Craig

This is a take on the Twelve Dancing Princesses fairytale. It’s set near the sea and involves some stormy scenes in a nearby lighthouse. It’s beautifully written but dark and twisted. It’ll keep you guessing and take you on a wild ride where you won’t know who to trust anymore- even the main character herself.

Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor, a manor by the sea, with her sisters, their father, and stepmother. Once they were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls’ lives have been cut short.

Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that the deaths were no accidents. Her sisters have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn’t sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who—or what—are they really dancing with?

When Annaleigh’s involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it’s a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family—before it claims her next.

  1. I read House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig in April for this challenge. I enjoyed it fine. I think I had super high expectations and ended up thinking it was okay. I did like the dark feel of it and I had not had much exposure to this particular fairy tale so I enjoyed experiencing it and a retelling of it. Passing it on to my niece to see how she likes it as she enjoys the fairy tale alot.
