5 (U)nderrated Books We Wish You Would Read

There are some books that we’ve read and loved – and can’t believe more people haven’t read them! We want to sing their praises so, here are 5 books that we wish would get more love.

+ Kim … 2 of my favorite reads that I wish got more love are …

Half Bad, Sally Green

I really don’t think this series got the publicity it deserved. I won an ARC of it a few years ago and it sat on my shelf forever because I had heard virtually nothing about it. When I finally cracked it open I was floored by how much I loved it. I flew through the entire series in a matter of days.

Sixteen-year-old Nathan lives in a cage: beaten, shackled, trained to kill. In a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans, Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world’s most terrifying and violent witch, Marcus. Nathan’s only hope for survival is to escape his captors, track down Marcus, and receive the three gifts that will bring him into his own magical powers—before it’s too late.

Nyxia, Scott Reintgen

I snagged a Kindle version of this book when it was first released. After finishing it I thought for sure, this one would be blowing up Bookstagram. Again, I heard virtually no buzz on it. Such a shame. I loved it and recommend it all the time to Scifi and YA readers.

Emmett Atwater isn’t just leaving Detroit; he’s leaving Earth. Why the Babel Corporation recruited him is a mystery, but the number of zeroes on their contract has him boarding their lightship and hoping to return to Earth with enough money to take care of his family. But Babel’s ship is full of secrets. And Emmett will face the ultimate choice: win the fortune at any cost, or find a way to fight that won’t forever compromise what it means to be human.

+ Tanya …  For this, I looked at the books I’ve read and loved on Goodreads that had less than 5,000 ratings – a totally arbitrary number. I also realized that this year, I’ve succumbed to the hype a lot more and read mostly popular books. But that’s how it is sometimes, so I’m not mad at that.

The Widows of Malabar Hill, Sujata Massey

This book is set in India, and is rich with culture and customs of different facets of Indian society. It was my selection to read from Amazon’s Best Books of January 2018 – and I’m so glad I got to experience it.

The Widows of Malabar Hill (Book)

Bombay, 1921: Mistry Law is handling the will of Mr. Omar Farid, a wealthy Muslim mill owner who has left three widows behind. But as Perveen, one of the first female lawyers in India, goes through the papers, she notices something strange: all three have signed over their inheritance to a charity. What will they live on if they forfeit what their husband left them? Perveen is suspicious.

Mr. Loverman, Bernardine Evaristo

Just read the summary and then be prepared for rich descriptions , andto both love and hate Barry, plus the added benefit of getting a ton of feels from this book. It tries to capture an element of the Caribbean lifestyle that many may not be familiar (the entrenched homophobia) with and is sure to generate lots of discussion.

Mr. Loverman

Seventy-four years old, Antiguan born and bred, flamboyant Hackney personality Barry is known for his dapper taste and fondness for retro suits. He is a husband, father and grandfather. And for the past sixty years, he has been in a relationship with his childhood friend and soulmate, Morris.

Iron Cast, Destiny Soria

I loved the historical alternative history and magical old school vibe of this book. So beautifully written and vibrant with rich description of the setting and well imagined characters. The author set the stage right from the beginning as we’re dropped into a World where hemopaths are being hunted down and there are few safe havens. The friendship between the girls take center stage and it was clear that they would do anything for each other. We, the readers, are always aware of the constant danger throughout the book and the action never lets up and the author teases out the story. I thoroughly enjoyed Iron Cast and would highly recommend it to anyone to read. And that cover! So gorgeous that it made our list of Favorite Book Covers.

  1. I liked, not loved, Half Bad. I didn’t read on in the series. Did you?

    • Yes. I read them all pretty quickly. I remember loving the rest of the series more than the first book because of the relationships of the characters and how they evolve.
