Monthly Book Award Reading Challenge 2020

Welcome to the first annual Book Awards Reading Challenge hosted here at GXO. We searched around for a reading challenge featuring book award winners, but couldn’t find any active ones, so we decided to host it!

HOW IT WORKS

  • This is a MONTHLY challenge that runs all year long from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020.
  • Your task is to read at least 1 book each month that has WON a book award in that month.
  • EXCEPT December. Read ANY book award winner.
  • Post what you’ve read anywhere online – your blog, Goodreads and social media using the hashtag #GXOAwardReadingChallenge
  • Come back to our check-in post published at the beginning of each month, and which will also be linked here, to leave a comment with a link to where you’ve posted or tell us in the comments about the book(s) you chose to read.

THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAILS

~ To count for the challenge, the book read must be an AWARD WINNER.

~ The award must have been announced in the same month the book is read. e.g. For January – any book that won the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction & Nonfiction in 2019 would qualify, because it was presented on January 27, 2019 – but a National Book Awards winner would not count for that month – because that award is presented in November.

~ All types of books and genres count – Fiction, Non-Fiction, Novellas, Audiobooks, Kid-lit, Adult, Young Adult, Middle Grade Fiction, etc.

For this month I read The Great Believers by Rebecca Makai. Absolutely loved it! It won the the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence. I’m also adding my instagram post about the book!

I’d love to participate in this reading challenge! It’s a great idea.

I’m having kind of an issue on the requirements though. Are we going by when an award was announced or presented? Like, The Audie Awards has a press release in February of the winners, but the awards ceremony is in March. Some awards sites are not easy to navigate for dates. >.<

Will you be updating https://www.girlxoxo.com/major-book-awards-calendar-for-2019-and-last-years-award-winners/ as new information is available, like February and September awards?

    • @Jen Go off of when the award was presented and yes, we’ll be updating the book awards calendar as the year goes on. Also, we’ll post a challenge check in post at the beginning of every month with some ideas on it. Lastly, you can join our Goodreads group (GXO Reading Challenges) to see other ideas.

I’m in for 2020. Getting back to my love of reading. Have joined several on Goodreads, but this one (in fact all of yours) look really intriguing!! Working on my list this month, so I’m ready for January!! I will be posting on my blog https://challengedtoread.blogspot.com/ or on Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/4928860

I have just found your challenges and am interested in doing some for 2020. I do have a question though. When you talk about posting about the challenge is writing about it on Goodreads acceptable or do you actually need a blog to participate?

    • @TraciLowrey Yes! Goodreads is totally acceptable. We’re very low key so post about it on whatever platform you have.

Wow! This is a challenging challenge! But it’s also tempting. I’ll have to think about it.

  11. You are new to me and I am happy to sign up for 2020! I post all the challenges I intend to do this coming year on the same page.

  12. Thanks, Tanya! I am ready to go then. Here’s my sign-up…now I just have to wait (however impatiently) for the new year.

  13. Are there any Book Awards that are given out in September? I’ve been hunting, but haven’t found anything yet.

    • Okay…found the Ngaio Marsh Awards–they seem to move around date-wise from Sept to October. Would it be okay to pick a book from a year that they awarded it in Sept?

      • And…the Hugo Awards have also bounced between August and September. Same question–can we do a Hugo in either month as long as that particular year it was awarded in the proper month?

        • Tanya Patrice

          Nov 14

Hi Bev – Great question. The book you choose – the year it won the award – the award must have been presented in that month.

Also in September – Dragon Con Awards (Science Fiction and Fantasy)
