Reading Lately [First Time With Scribd]

I signed up for the free 30-day trial of Scrib’d and these are the first few books I borrowed with my new membership.

Trail of Lightening, Rebecca Roanhorse

While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. Maggie Hoskie is a Dinétah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer. Kai Arviso is an unconventional medicine man. Together they travel the rez to unravel clues from ancient legends, trade favors with tricksters, and battle dark witchcraft in a patchwork world of deteriorating technology.

Trail of Lightening

I started this book a while back, but somehow misplaced the book! I was really into the story, so it was the first book I selected with my free trial of Scrib’d. And it didn’t disappoint. There’s so much to love about Trail of Lightening – the world building, the characters, the chemistry, the story! I totally enjoyed this and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Recursion, Black Crouch

Memory makes reality. That’s what New York City cop Barry Sutton is learning as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome. Neuroscientist Helena Smith already understands the power of memory. It’s why she’s dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious moments of our pasts. But how can they make a stand when reality itself is shifting and crumbling all around them?

Recursion

I read Crouch’s previous book, Dark Matter (see #ReadThis 3 Alternate Reality Books That Turn Things Upside Down) – and his latest book, Recursion, has been hyped up so much that I decided to make this this first audiobook I listened to on Scrib’d. It was readily available and thanks to a flights last week, including layover time, I was available to finish Recursion in record time (for me). The audiobook is narrated by Jon Lindstrom and Abby Craden – who both were incredible. The story is phenomenal and just the intellect that went into putting this time travel tome together is clearly epic. And the last few chapters and the epilogue had me on the edge of my seat. But, there were times when I thought the book went into too much detail, making it longer than necessary. But – still an excellent book though!

The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls

The Butler family has had their share of trials – as sisters Althea, Viola, and Lillian can attest – but nothing prepared them for the literal trial that will upend their lives. They are as stunned as the rest of the small community when  Althea, the eldest sister and substitute matriarch, and her husband Proctor are arrested. In a heartbeat the family goes from one of the most respected in town to utter disgrace. As Althea awaits her fate, Lillian and Viola must come together in the house they grew up in to care for their sister’s teenage daughters.

I loved Recursion and Crouch’s other book, Dark Matter. Thinking I might need to go back and read some of his older books. Definitely makes me think about memory and power of choice.
