Reading Lately – Middle Grade March

March reading has been all about Middle Grade. As I’ve been pressed for time I’m also leaning heavily on graphic novels that I can read in short bursts.

Last Book Finished

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise, Dan Gemeinhart

I had an ebook of Coyote Sunrise which I read for the #BookAwardReadingChallenge. It won a Cybil for Middle Grade in 2019. I really enjoyed it even though I did feel that a couple chapters in the middle dragged a bit.

It’s been five years since Coyote and her dad hit the road in an old yellow school bus. Five years since her mom and two sisters were killed in a car accident. Five years since they buried a memory box at a local park. Now that park is set to be demolished and Coyote has got one week to convince her dad to drive 3,600 miles back home to get it.

When Stars Are Scattered, Victoria Jamieson

Last night I settled down with this middle grade graphic novel. I only read a few pages before falling asleep but I’m excited to read more today. I read Roller Girl by the same author and made the note to read more when I had the chance. I think this is based on a true story but I honestly don’t know much more about it other than it comes highly recommended.

Omar and his younger, nonverbal, brother, Hassan, have spent most of their lives in Dadaab, a refugee camp in Kenya. When Omar has the opportunity to go to school, he knows it might be a chance to change their future . . . but it would also mean leaving his brother, the only family member he has left, every day.

I’ve been reading a lot of middle grade fiction as well. My son is right at that age and I’m enjoying finding books he’d enjoy reading. I read When the Stars Are Scattered last summer and we both learned a lot from it. Excellently done.

I have Coyote Sunrise on my list as well. Happy reading!

    • Yes! My son is just now getting to the age where he can handle longer chapter books. I’m constantly on the look out for good ones.
