(B)ooked Out [July 2022]

How was your month in books? Which book was your favorite? Did you participate in any reading events? Work on any of your reading challenges? Here’s a look at what we’ve read this month.

KIM

In July I read 4 crime thrillers. I liked them all but they were so similar that I’m now having trouble remember which book was which. I’d say my favorite book this month was Crownchasers, Rebecca Coffindaffer. I just needed a good space opera and this one fit the bill.

I also read the The Merciless Ones (The Gilded Ones #2), Namina Forna this month. It was highly anticipated for me after being blown away by the first book last year. It was a good follow up book but I wouldn’t say that it blew me away. I’m still trying to decide if I’ll finish the series.

The four thrillers I read this month…

  • The Last to Vanish, Megan Miranda ☆☆☆☆
  • Things We Do in the Dark, Jennifer Hillier ☆☆☆☆
  • The Cabin in the Woods, Sarah Alderson ☆☆☆☆
  • In My Dreams I Hold A Knife, Ashley Winstead ☆☆☆☆☆

TANYA PATRICE

In July, I read 6 books including 1 that I couldn’t finish, My Heart is a Chainsaw, Stephen Graham Jones. Although it won a Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel (2021) and a Locus Award for Best Horror Novel (2022), I just couldn’t get into it, and called it quits about a third of the way through. I didn’t have any “5 star” reads, but my favorite – a tie between A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking, T. Kingfisher, and The Final Girl Support Group, Grady Hendrix.

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking is just such a cute story about coming into one’s own and working with what you’ve got to do fantastic things. I love books with magical elements – and I never thought I’d read one about making magic with bread, dough, cookies etc. The Final Girl Support Group is completely different – no magic here. “Final girls” are the survivors of horrific murders and the premise is about what happens to them afterwards – after they save themselves … after the book deals, movies and attention wanes … but does it ever really? How do they cope – and what happens when people won’t leave them alone. How do they manage it?!

The other books I read in July …

  • Book of Night, Holly Black ☆☆☆☆
  • Gwendy’s Final Task, Stephen King ☆☆☆☆
  • Nothing But Blackened Teeth, Cassandra Khaw ☆☆☆☆
