Summer (U)pdate!

Kim here. I can’t believe we’re on the tail end of summer! School starts back up at the end of August and I’m equal parts ready and not ready. This summer was fairly traditional, considering all the covid restrictions in place. We really tried to make the best of things and I wanted to document some of the things that we’ve been up to….

TRAVELING – Lots of local places.

We’re still pretty sad that our trip to Disneyland over spring break had to be cancelled so we decided to do the best we could with some small ‘vacations’ this summer. Since plane travel was pretty much out of the question we did a couple of camping trips and also made our way down south to Moab and Arches National Park. We are so lucky to live in one of the most beautiful states and we try not to take that for granted.

MAKING – Friendship bracelets.

On a whim I brought the supplies to make some bracelets along on our roadtrip to Moab. I spent a good portion of the drive making bracelets for each of my boys. They loved picking out their own ‘cool’ colors and love it even more when I told them they’d get a wish if they wore it until it fell off.

PLAYING – Outside.

I’m so thankful that parks, splash pads, and snow cone shacks have reopened. I was truly nervous about keeping my boys occupied all summer without these outlets. We spend nearly every day in the water or at the park and it’s been good for my soul to be out of the house. Plus, the boys completely tired themselves out. We’ve also been out hiking as often as possible and it’s been so good for all of us.

GROWING – All the veggies!

Our garden is going strong after a pretty rough start this spring. I finally got a handle on all the pests and the weather finally decided to cooperate. This year we opted only to plan peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, carrots and radishes. Believe it or not, it’s only been in the past couple of weeks that we’ve started to harvest. We’ll continue to harvest into the fall and I’m currently debating planting a fall crop.

PRACTICING – My archival skills.

Did you know that you can volunteer your time transcribing important historical documents for the Library of Congress? Since a good portion of my time as a digital archivist was spent transcribing documents, I absolutely love this! I spend about 5-10 minutes of my time logging on and transcribing a few things for LOC whenever I can and it’s been so fun.

LEARNING – To shuffle dance.

I first saw shuffle dance about six months ago on TikTok and was blown away. It looked like so much fun (it is!) and I wanted to learn how to do it. Since then I’ve been teaching myself and practicing whenever I can. I just find tutorials on Youtube or TikTok and work on them until I have them down. Even though I’m a dancer, it’s been a challenge to train my body to move in a whole new way.

ENJOYING – Our new privacy fence.

We finally pulled the trigger after six years of living here and paid to have a vinyl fence installed around our property. I can’t believe how much more comfortable I feel sitting in the yard reading or doing my yoga or watching the boys play.

ANTICIPATING – Fall fun!

Man I love Fall. I love the fun events we do here on the blog, the autumn festivities, the food, all of it. I know it’s not going to be quite the same with all of this covid stuff going on, but I’m still hoping to soak up as much as I can, even if it’s only here at home.

What are your summer highlights?
