#AMonthofFaves 4 (More ) New (to Us) Author Discoveries

Did you mostly stick with books by your favorite authors last year? We ventured out quite a bit and discovered quite a few authors who we want to read more from in the future.

First, let’s look back at last year’s 5 New-to-Us Awesome Author Discoveries to see which authors we followed up with and read more from.

Old Favorites

Tanya – Last year I discovered Sabaa Tahir 💓 when I read books 1 and 2 in the An Ember in the Ashes series. Sadly there was no new book out in 2017 – but the 3rd book is supposed to come out in 2018, so I’m looking forward to reading that.

Also on my list was Renee Ahdieh 💓, for book 1 in The Wrath & The Dawn which I read and loved last year. This year, I went on to read the second book in the duology – The Rose & The Dagger – which I also loved, AND Flame in the Mist, which I liked, but not really enough to continue with that series when the book comes out.

Finally, M.R. Carey 💓was on my list for his awesome book The Girl With All the Gifts. This year, I read Fellside AND The Boy on the Bridge, both of which are awesome as well.

Kim – Last year I discovered Lynne Matson 💓 who completed her Nil series in 2016. I liked the first book quite a bit, but not enough to continue with the trilogy. I also discovered Sally Green 💓 when I read her Half Bad series and loved it. She finished her series in 2016 as well so I’m still waiting on new stuff from her. Lastly, I discovered V.E. Schwab 💓 who wrote the Shades of London series. I’m currently in the middle of the third book in that series.

New Author Discoveries

Tanya – This year, there are so many authors that could make this list, so I had to narrow it down – and I chose to only look at authors who have published more than 1 book. I’m picking only 2 authors. One whose books touched me – made me feel a lot of the feels – and the other author’s book kept me guessing with all the mystery and intrigue.

Fredrik Bachman

I read A Man Called Ove and it just blew me away. Kim had put it on her list as one of the Top 10 Books That Blew Our Minds in 2016 – and I just got around to reading it this year, and wow! The book is touching and has characters in it that will stay with you long after you’re finished reading. Backman recently released Beartown, and it’s made many of the “Best Books of the Year” lists, so I’m looking forward to reading it too.

Shari Lapena

The Couple Next Door was a fast paced, twisty, dramatic novel (that does requires some suspension of disbelief at times). Many of the characters are unlikeable, some are quite whiny which at times irritated the hell out of me … and kept me reading! The author recently published A Stranger in the House, which she also describes as “twisty.” I can’t wait to read it!

Kim – I read a lot of new to me authors this year but only a handful turned out to be ones I want to read more from. Here are my top two.

Samantha Shannon

Shannon wrote The Bone Season series. I’ve read the first book and really enjoyed it. It’s one of those books that left me hanging so, of course, I have to read book two find out what will happen to some of my favorite characters.

Michael Grant

I randomly stumbled upon BZRK, the first book in the series by the same name, earlier in the year. The book was awesome and I can’t wait to read more. I recently checked out Grant’s bio on Goodreads and he says he’s the “author or coauthor of over 160 books!” Say what?! I guess I’d better get reading because I pretty much want to read whatever he’s written now.

Which authors are you planning on reading more from next year? WHo would you suggest we check out? And if you’re participating in #AMonthofFaves – add your blog post (or social media link) to the linky below. We’d love to come and check out your post.

Michael Grant is married to Katherine Applegate, and they have written some books together.

My emoji didn’t post, but basically it was an “Isn’t that cool?/The more you know” deal. Her book dedications were always “For Michael” so once I learned they were married, everything clicked.

    • I didn’t know that! So cool to make that connection.

  2. It’s the best feeling when you find a new author to love. Maggie Stiefvater was my “discovery” this year. (I know, I’m way behind the times). I’ve been meaning to read Michael Grant too, though…
