Our Reading (I)nbox [A 2020 Mid-Year Reading List Update]

We’re keeping track of the books that we’ve mentioned here on GXO, that we’d like to read this year, and trying to give them first priority. Plus checking in with how we’re doing with our reading challenges. Here’s our my mid-year “to be read” report.

TANYA PATRICE

The first few books added to my reading list this year are on the Best Books of 2019 That We Missed and I read all 3 books on the list. Pet, Akwaeke Emezi and Get a Life Chloe Brown, Talia Hibbert were really fantastic, but Normal People, Sally Rooney, was just OK for me. I might watch a few episodes of the tv series on Hulu to see if that’s better.

Pet (Book) Akwaeke Emezi

From our list of 2020 New Releases On Our Radar I’ve only read If It Bleeds, Stephen King! Loved it! I still plan on reading the other books on the list and hope to get to at least some of them over the summer.

If It Bleeds

My Spring Reading List was rather short with only 1 new title – Deathless Divide (Dread Nation #2), Justina Ireland. It took me a little while to warm up to this one, but it developed into an outstanding sequel to Dread Nation.

So the books still on my reading list – in my reading inbox – are …

  • The Glass Hotel, Emily St. John Mandel
  • The Ballard of Songbird and Snakes, Suzanne Collins
  • Chosen Ones, Veronica Roth
  • The City We Became, N.K. Jemisin
  • The House in the Cerulean Sea, TJ Klune
  • Agency, William Gibson

I started off the year trying hard to track everything I said I would read because I’m not great with follow through on this. From our list of 2020 New Releases On Our Radar I’ve only read Network Effect, Martha Wells. I do have plans to read Aurora Burning, Jay Kristoff this summer and I’m for sure going to read Clap When You Land, Elizabeth Acevedo and Stormsong, CL Polk before the end of the year.

It turns out that I also read The City We Became, N.K. Jemisin from Tanya’s Release Radar and I have the audio of The House in The Cerulean Sea, T.J. Klune and plan to listen to it this month. Sadly, I no longer have interest in any of the others I mentioned- at least not for now.

From Best Books of 2019 That We Missed I only listened to Ninth House, Leigh Bardugo but just wasn’t in the mood and put it away for the time being. I have plans to revisit it later on. I still have interest in the other books I mentioned but just haven’t made time for them yet.

From Books On Our 2020 Spring Reading List I mentioned Aurora Burning, Jay Kristoff again! Apparently I just need to read this already. I also mentioned Recursion, Blake Crouch. I still want to read this. I listened to Dark Matter earlier in the year and thought it was pretty decent.

What haven’t you read yet this year but still want to?
